The Penalty Box The Penalty Box
Vol 1 Issue 7 [April 8, 2009]
**PENALTY BOX ALERT!** WCTHL Standings will be the final standings as of all games played on March 22/09. The Islanders (Dave W) has agreed to accept his 34 games in the WCTHL as his final games in the 2008-09 regular season.
Now that the regular season schedule has been completed, let the playoffs begin! Here are pairings and my personal picks of the first round of the 2008-09 playoffs. To all players, good luck and please e-mail your picks and predictions of what you think the outcome of the games will be at bhepting@telus.net Good Luck and here we go!
KC (Pittsburgh Penguins) *BYE* (1st Place)
Bill (Philadelphia Flyers) 2nd vs. Tyler (Montreal Canadiens) 7th
The Flyers(Bill) have been goal starved all year. The Canadiens can't score either. But the Flyers experience, goaltending and defense may prove too much for Tyler (Montreal) to deal with. But in the last 5 games, Montreal has come to life. It will take every effort from defense and offense for Montreal to outscore and win this series. This could be closer than what we all think. But in reality PICK: PHILADELPHIA IN 5. Dave W. (NY Islanders) 3rd vs. Dave M. (Vancouver Canucks) 6th
The New York Islanders (Dave W) have played 6 games less in their regular season schedule due to personal circumstances. But with that taken in to consideration, the Stanley Cup Champs still remain the biggest threat to capture their second straight crown. Their speed and big scoring line will be their plan to beat the Canucks. But Dave M (Vancouver) may have something to say about this outcome. The Canucks have great tenacity to send a message to the Islanders. The improvement in the Canucks is under-rated in here. But, the outcome will still favour the Isles. PICK: NY ISLANDERS IN 6.
Steve (Dallas Black Hawks) 4th vs. Justin (Toronto Maple Leafs) 5th
The Dallas Black Hawks haved been a thorn in the side of all teams this season. Their defense is incredible but their offense has not arrived yet. If anything can cost the Hawks this series, it will be their offense. The Leafs (Justin) have speed and accuracy but their defense is quesionable. It is as simple as this, Whichever player can outscore the other in this series, wins! This is the toughest series to predict. But I can see defense beating offense in this series. PICK: DALLAS IN 6. Season Clinches: KC (Pittsburgh Penguins) 1st Place Overall, Scoring Championship, Bill (Philadelphia Flyers) Vezina, Best GAA. There it is. Those are my predictions for the first round of the WCTHL playoffs. Let me know your picks! The UNOFFICIAL Playoff date is hopefully planned for the 2nd of May. I have been in touch with KC and will await his response. Good luck and let's have a great first round and a great playoff overall series. Best wishes to all players *Penalty Box Notes* Playoff date (s) will be announced as soon as possible. At the time of this publication, Saturday May 2nd is unofficially set as that date. All players must be present for that date to commence the playoffs. If there is a problem which will affect your attendance for that date, please inform myself or KC as soon as possible, As soon as confirmation of the 2nd of May is received, notifications to all players will be e-mailed. I will be in touch with KC for his confirmation. Best wishes and lets get the playoffs rolling!!!!

The "Penalty Box" also wants your feedback as players with your opinions and predictions, once the matches are set. Penguin Meltdown in Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Penguins had rather not shown up when the New York Islanders arrived in town on Saturday. The Islanders handed the Pens their worst ever home ice loss in history with a 9-1 whitewashing. The Isles scored 4 first and 4 third period goals with one more sandwiched in the middle to complete the rout. Both the Pens and the Isles are top favorites to meet in the Cup final this spring. If that is the case, the Pens must recieve a wake up call before it is too late. The Isles found the back of the net 7 more times in a re-match in New York later on to sweep the weekend series. If this trend continues, look for the Isles to bring thier brooms for a complete playoff sweep.
Montreal First To Win By Default
The struggling Montreal Canadiens got a shot in the arm on Saturday with a win gift-wrapped by the Dallas Black Hawks. The 'Hawks' were caught three times by the referee for "foul play" by using the defenseman to center play for a scoring breakaway attempt. The rule stands that a player cannot poke or push the puck with his defenseman to his center for scoring purpose because the play is completely undefendable. Referee, Dave Wright, gave 2 warnings to the "Hawks". On the third attempt, the game was called and Montreal was awarded with a 1-0 victory. The shutout, however does not count in the statistics, but the one goal does for and against. The default win was the first of its kind in the WCTHL.
"Hawks" Snap "Isles" Streak
A Dallas Black Hawk 3rd period goal off an Islander defenseman stood up as the winner in a 3-2 upset of the Isles in Dallas. The victory for Dallas snapped a 18 game win streak by the New York Club. The Stanley Cup champs own an impressive 17-4-3 record and are favored to repeat as Stanley Cup Champions.
Fading Flyers Fall Again
The goal starved Philadelphia Flyers once again performed their 'fall behind' and then "let's play game" on Saturday with thier nemesis Dallas Black Hawks. After deciding to play hide and seek with the Dallas Black Hawks, hiding for the first two periods, the Flyers started to seek in the third period by scoring 3 goals. It wasn't enough and the result was a 5-4 loss at home. It was the 3rd straight loss to the upstart Hawks. "They've had our number all year. We just have to fix that".
*Penalty Box Notes*
The next WCTHL games are planned for Saturday March 21st. As soon as confirmation is received, I will inform all the players. This will be the final regular season games scheduled before the playoffs commence. The playoff date will be determined after the 21st of March games. Again, I would like to thank all the players for their sportmanship and special thanks to KC for his home for our league games locale.
Good Luck and I hope to see you all on March 21st. (Pending)

The Penalty Box
Vol 1 Issue 5 [January 28, 2009]
Grand Theft: Dallas
The Philadelphia Flyers are getting used to being "hawked" by Dallas. On Saturday they were outright robbed all game long by the Black Hawks losing 2-1, just as they did losing 4-1 on October 25th. On Saturday all game long the Flyers outshot, outplayed and all but mugged the Dallas Black Hawks for 3 periods. The result was that the Flyers couldn't put a beachball in the ocean. For the second game this season, the Flyers had to use the extra attacker in the dying seconds to score their lone goal. That was also the method of scoring on October 25th. In both those games they had not scored an even strength goal against Dallas. "We have to change that format quickly" said the Flyers. "They just seem to smother us completely every time we play them".
Pens Pad Point Lead
The Pittsburgh Penguins easily padded their first place lead over the second place Flyers by 8 points. (The 3rd place Islanders, however have 7 games in hand on Philly and 9 on the Pens) after missing action on the 24th of January). Pittsburgh made things look rather easy on Saturday by going undefeated. The only point they lost was in a scrappy 2-2 tie with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Pens thought that the tying Philly goal was scored off the face-off, but on further review the goal was actually passed back from the center to the defenseman who was onside. That goal made it 2-2 in the first period and the score stood as final. The score flattered the Pens who were outplayed in the 3rd period, but the Flyers failed to score to win the game.
"Crazy Canuck/Flyer Tie"
The Vancouver Canucks delightfully treated the host goal starved Philadelphia Flyers to a gift point in the standings on Saturday, by scoring on themselves late in the third period. With the Canucks leading 2-1 in the last minute, their defensemen re-directed an attemped scoring pass play by Philly into their own net. The last meeting between these 2 clubs resulted in a 3-3 tie with the Canucks scoring the last 3 goals of that game.
Leafs Dump Black Hawks
The Toronto Maple Leafs scored 2 late third period goals to dispose of the visiting Dallas Black Hawks 3-2. The Leafs are undefeated in 3 games with a 2-1 win over Vancouver and a 1-1 tie with Montreal.
**WCTHL SPECIAL UPDATE**
With the regular season nearly 75% completed, there have been surprises, upsets and disappointments. What may be the biggest surprise of this season is the improved play of the Dallas Black Hawks, defensively. The "Hawks" have been in every one of their games this season including two stunning wins over the Flyers and Isles. On Saturday, even the League leading Pens were hard pressed to defeat the "Hawks" 3-1. Dallas actually won the last two periods of that game 2-0. The other surprise may be the play of the Cup Champs the Islanders who haven't missed a heartbeat in winning 13 in a row. The Isles missed action, though, on Saturday. The disappointment may be in the play of the aging Flyers, although they own a rather impressive record of 14-5-5, Philadelphia has hit a speed-bump in their offense scoring only 5 goals against teams they should beat soundly. The problem simply is their confidence. That has to change. Toronto and Vancouver have also showed big gains this season.
*Penalty Box Notes*
* Their has been no decision on the next WCTHL games date. However, Feb. 28th could be a target date or the weekend prior to that. I will be in touch with KC for his schedule update.
* Also we have to be more careful with alcohol on games days. We all have to realize that we have to arrive home safely. So, let's all be more observant of how much we drink during game days.
* There should be 2 more regular season meetings and then the playoffs should be planned for sometime in April. I will be discussing these dates with Dave.
Again, I would like to thank all players for their professional sportsmanship and consideration of KC's home for our Hockey League games.
Good Luck and Best Wishes and I will hopefully see you all in February.

The Penalty Box
Vol 1 Issue 4 [November 26, 2008]
Red Hot "Isles"Set WCTHL Record
The New York Islanders didn't have to find their game plan and then put it on ice. They did it a much easier way. They just simply used a snow-plough and blew the rest of the league away with an impressive 10-0-1 record setting pace. They opened up with a 6-3 win over Pittsburgh and never looked back. The CupChamps are 13-3-1 and have 4 games in hand on the league leading Pens. Slumping "Black Hawks" winless in 9
The Dallas Black Hawks last win was on October 25th, 2-0 against the last place Canadiens. But their stretch of losses isn't all that bleak. In those 9 contests, Dallas 0-4-5, has picked up 5 points on draws in the overall WCTHL standings. Scoring offensive goals is a rarity these days for the second season "Hawks". However, Dallas has allowed the third fewest goals in the WCTHL this season, 44, trailing Vezina leading Philadelphia by 10. The Flyers have only allowed 34 goals in 19 games, a sparkling 1.79 GA Average. The Vancouver Canucks have allowed 33 goals against, but have only played 10 games. WCTHL "All Tied Up"
There were more ties on November 22nd in the WCTHL than in the men's wear section at the Bay. There was a record setting 9 draws on Saturday including three 0-0 ties, a new WCTHL record. The most stunning one, a 0-0 final between the Leafs and the Flyers in Philadelphia. The Flyers evaporatingoffense couldn't slip a goal past the 3-11-7 Leafs. "We just have to get back our confidence on goal scoring and not be reliant on our defense and goaltending to bail us out" Flyer Management said today. Scoreless Shutout "Sharks"
The Toronto Maple Leafs are becoming wise in the ways of nothing. Nothing, of course, referring to their three 0-0 shutouts in their last 6 games. One third of Toronto's games have ended in deadlocks. 'Hands Up' Pucks In!
Celebration is great, especially after the event. But slightly before the required performance is completed is really not the time to break out the champagne. Just ask the Dallas Black Hawks about their pre-meditated revelry in a game against Pittsburgh on October 25th. With arms raised in delight of a tie, 2-2, the Pens promptly deposited a goal with 2 seconds left to play and won the game 3-2. The only thing that the Hawks could say was, "oops". *Penalty Box Notes*
Their has been no decision on the next WCTHL games date. With Christmas near, it appears that a date in January will be most likely scheduled. January 17/2009 would be a target date, but of course it would have to be a favorable date for all teams to meet. I will be in contact with KC to see if that date may be open.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all teams and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I want to again thank KC for his kindness and hospitality for making his home available for our League games. We must also remember, too, to respect his home while we are there and enjoy our games in a sportsworthy manner. I also thank all of you for your professional sportmanship to date this WCTHL season.

'Hawks' Dump 'Flyers'
Two first period and two second period goals were enough to dispose of the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Saturday, giving the second year franchise Dallas Black Hawks their first ever victory over the 2nd place Flyers. The Black Hawks dominated Philly in every aspect of the game eliminating virtually every opportunnity the Flyers presented. The only Philadelphia goal came in the dying seconds with the extra attacker.
Flyers Shake Pittsburgh "Monkey"
The Philadelphia Flyers managed to "get the monkey off their backs", [the Pittsburgh Penguins] stunning the Pens 7 - 3 on Saturday. Dating back to late 2006, the Flyers had not a regulation win over the Pens. Philadelphia thumped the Pens sparked by their big line, winger to center, giving Pittsburgh too much to handle. The Philly party however was short-lived with their ensuing loss, 4 - 1 to Dallas.
Pens Triple Wins At "Beat The Clock"
Don't tell the Pittsburgh Penguins that time is running out on the scoreboard. Time has not concerned the Pens of late. The Penguins won three games in the last 2 seconds of each game and promptly deposited 6 points in the standings bank. The Pens scored the winning goals with 2 seconds left twice on Montreal and once on Dallas. Pittsburgh is in first place overall with a record of 10 - 2 - 1 with 21 points.
Toronto Wins Their First "Nine-Zip"
The Toronto Maple Leafs opened up a bag of "goodies" for themselves and a can of "worms" for Chicago. The Leafs scored twice in the first period, four times in the second and 3 more in the third, smothering the Blackhawks 9 - 0. It was the first of 2 wins and a tie in their initial season. Their other win was a 3 - 2 triumph over first year Montreal.
Montreal Nips Toronto 3-2
The Montreal Canadiens snapped a 2 - 2 second period tie and went on to defeat the host Toronto Maple Leafs 3 - 1 on the last game on the menu on Saturday night. It was their 2nd win of the young season.
*Penalty Box Notes*
There has been no decision on the next scheduled games date. If Saturday November 22/08 is open for KC this would most likely be acceptable to all of the players. I will be in contact with KC and he will then be able to inform the rest of the league.

Black Hawk Shocker
Don't tell the Islanders the date of the next game with them and the Dallas Blackhawks. They may not prefer to know. The upstart 'Hawks" picked the bones of the favored Isles, not once, but stunned them twice in three outings winning the last meeting 5-3 in Dallas. The Hawks won the season opener in Dallas 6-4 and lost 5-4 on the Island before returning home and beating the Isles 5-3. The 'Hawks' lead the season series 2 games to 1 and cannot wait to get back to the dance with New York.
Dallas leads the Fraser Valley Conference with 5 points.
*********************************************
Aging Flyers Surprise
The Philadelphia Flyers surprised themselves and threw a new light on their sights of first place in the tough Pacific Conference of the WCTHL. A sparkling 1.60 goals against average helped Philly through a monkey wrench into the race for first place. A 7-0 trouncing of the visiting New York Islanders put more than a glimmer of hope for the Flyers to capture the conference.
The Flyers have one game in hand on the Conference leading Pens.
**********************************************
Islanders Ice Penquins
The New York Islanders scored enough goals, seven of them to put the Conference leading Pens on ice, 7-5. The Islanders will have to score quick and often to alleviate their woeful goals against average of 4.83.
The Isles lead the league with 26 goals scored.
**********************************************
Penguins 'Ripped Off'?
The first place Pittsburgh Penguins claim the Philadelphia Flyers hung on to the puck to long in the final 10 seconds of their 1-1 tie in Philly last Saturday. The rule is that a penalty shot must be called if a player hangs on to the puck more than 5 seconds without attempting a play. The Flyers had the puck for the full 10 seconds with their left winger glued to the puck. The Flyers claim that in the final 5 seconds they were not hanging on to it but attempting to pass the puck to the center.
**********************************************
*Penalty Box Notes
The next scheduled WCTHL games will be set tentatively for October 25th. The first game will be Justin (Toronto) @ Bill (Philadelphia), a make-up game from September 20th. All teams will then have played 6 games. The succeeding schedule will then commence. Justin (Toronto) garnered his first point last Saturday with a 1-1 draw with Steve (Dallas).

Bill The Penalty Box
Vol 1 Issue 1 [September 12, 2008]
With a new season on the horizon, here is a brief assessment of the teams and their possible performances.
New York Islanders - (Dave) - Last season as the Hartford Whalers, this team played only 3 regular season games and won the cup with a 4 games to 1 series against the Penguins and a 4-2 series win over a stubborn Flyer squad in the semis. This season look for the Islanders to use their lethal line to capture first place. But they will be weaker in goal and that could make a slight difference. The Flyers scored a record 26 goals on them in 4 playoff games. The Flyers felt the 4-3 and 5-4 losses cost them a berth in the final. Islanders should have only to fend off the pesky Penguins for 1st.
Pittsburgh Penguins - (KC) - This team is probably the fastest team in the league and can score suddenly on any opposition. Their defense is the best in the league but their offence may rank 3rd. Their skill is exceptional. If they play well enough all year they can possibly capture first. But, they will not outscore the Islanders. A 2nd place finish in this year's standing is where they will be.
Philadelphia Flyers - (Bill) - This aging giant of a franchise will hang around enough to maybe squeak out a 3rd or 4th place finish in the standings. Their goaltending is the best in the league but their defence has slowed and the offence is off target. If for some reason, they respond with any improvement on offence and defence, they may have a chance for 2nd. But 3rd is pushing it and a first round exit in the playoffs is probable. We'll take them for 3rd, but it is gonna mean a lot of hard work.
Dallas Black Hawks - (Steve) - Up and Coming Hawks will just get better. But their anemic offense will rear it's ugly head here. Their goaltending and defense is great, but goal scoring will be at a premium here. They have desire and talent and can pull off upsets in here. 3rd place is not impossible here beating out an old Flyer team. But they have to score. A 3rd place finish is possible, but most likely 4th is the answer.
Montreal Canadiens - (Tyler) - Unscouted and Unknown at this moment. It will be reasonable to assume that a new franchise player will attempt to pull out all the stops. 5th or 6th, based only on their entry status.
Toronto Maple Leafs - (Justin) - Unscouted and Unknown at this moment. It will be reasonable to assume that a new franchise player will attempt to pull out all the stops. 5th or 6th based only on their entry status.
* Lets kick off the season on September 20th! Have fun and compete fairly.
*Penalty Box Notes*
At this point the only rule change is that there will be NO OVERTIME sessions. If, at the end of the 3rd period the game is tied, that will indeed be the score. As of this writing the votes were 2-0 for this change. Dave and Bill. KC and Steve have not voted yet. Only 1 more vote in favour of this amendment will clinch the change. A 2-2 tie would mean that a card with "yes" and a card with "no" will be put in the hat and the one drawn out will rule. New players cannot vote on this amendment. KC and Steve - contact Dave with your vote.
Good Luck!
Bill
